BIOGRAPHY: Professor Beer retired in 2011 after 45 years teaching Greek and Roman Studies at Carleton University. He still teaches part-time and writes about Greek drama. In 2004 his book Sophocles and the Tragedy of Athenian Democracy was published; he is currently writing the entry on Sophocles for the Literary Encyclopedia, designed to be the most extensive on-line literary encyclopedia in the world. For the past eleven years, he has produced annually semi-staged performances of Greek tragedies for the College of Humanities at Carleton.
